Below, I have featured a very famous work of art by Russel Drysdale who was able to capture a time in Australian History that Lawson sought to describe in his short stories. The painting shows the isolated, desolate, flat and harsh environment of Australian bush life. The painting shows a family, each member is assuming a traditional role in the family. The mother in this painting is a strong, sturdy woman who is a hard-working mother who cares for her family the best way that she knows how. She has adapted to her environment and represents the sentiment that Lawson is expressing through 'The Drovers Wife'. Before you read the short-story look carefully at this painting, read what the images are trying to tell you. Once you have done this: answer the following questions.
1- What is the atmosphere of the painting? (use adjectives and descriptive language)
2- Describe the setting using language that is Distinctively Visual.
3- What does this painting say about what it may be like to live in the Australian bush?
